Resident Burned After Nursing Home Fire

One resident was injured and dozens of others had to be evacuated after a morning fire at a nursing home in Carteret County.

Firefighters in Newport say they got the call around 8:45 a.m. to Somerset Court, that's off Market Street.

The fire chief said a nurse managed to put out the fire in the resident's room with a fire extinguisher before the sprinklers came on. One resident at the facility was taken to the hospital for burns, but there's no word on the extent of their injuries.

The nursing home has around 70 residents.
