Preston Won't Run Again For State Senate In 2012

A coastal North Carolina senator says she won't seek re-election this year after two decades serving in the General Assembly.

Republican Sen. Jean Preston of Carteret County announced Friday her decision to leave the Legislature at the close of her 10th two-year term. She served 14 years in the House.

The 76-year-old retired educator said it's time for her to move to another chapter in her life that will involve more time with family and grandchildren.

Preston is the co-chairwoman of the Senate appropriations education budget subcommittee.

Senate leader Phil Berger said Preston has helped make a better future for the state's children.

Preston's Senate district covers Carteret, Pamlico and Craven counties.
