A local man died Sunday when he was reportedly swimming in the ocean for the first time.
The Pine Knoll Shores Fire Department said a 26-year-old man from Greenville died Sunday when a wave hit him near the Iron Steamer beach access point.
Authorities say the man was with several co-workers when he was hit by a large wave and killed.
Police have not yet released the man's name, saying his family in Africa had not been notified.
Red flags were flying when the man went under.
