The district attorney says there will be no charges brought against a former Morehead City police officer who accidentally shot another cop.
D.A. Scott Thomas says while Officer Marvin Willis "demonstrated a high level of negligence" in not properly clearing his handgun, the district attorney says that does not rise to the level of criminal intent.
On Monday, Morehead City officials said Willis was fired for lying during their internal investigation.
The shooting happened on October 2nd in the police department parking lot. Officer Garrett Hardin was hit in the chest during a training exercise and was in the hospital for one week.
The D.A. says Willis has already lost his job with Morehead City and what happened will be reported to the Criminal Justice Training Standards Commission. They are responsible for Willis' law enforcement certification.
Thomas says Morehead City plans to conduct a thorough review of its officer training program to avoid this from happening again.
A police officer who authorities say accidentally shot another officer last month has been fired by the Morehead City Police Department.
That has been confirmed by Morehead City manager David Whitlow.
Marvin Willis III remains under investigation by the SBI for the shooting of fellow Officer Garrett Hardin on October 2nd during a training exercise in the police department parking lot.
Hardin was shot in the chest and was released from Vidant Medical Center a week later.
Willis, who had worked for the town since September of 2011, was placed on administrative leave immediately after the shooting.
He was fired on October 28th. According to his termination letter, Willis was let go after their internal investigation "revealed that you were untruthful in your statements concerning the events that took place on October 2, 2013."
The SBI says their investigation in the officer shooting is continuing.
Whitlow said no disciplinary action been taken against any other officers involved in the shooting at this point.
