New Lifeguards Make Beach Goers Feel Safer

Beach goers will now have an extra sense of security when they head to one local beach. Emerald isle has a new lifeguard program that kicked off this past weekend.

There are 4 lifeguards on the beach. One is at the town's 2 regional beach accesses and two others patrol up and down the beach as well. Last year, there were no certified lifeguards but emergency personnel rode on ATVs. According to officials, there were 67 water rescues last year and 3 drownings with no lifeguards. This year is different and beach goers appreciate it

"A lot of time we see kids go out pretty far out and with little ones. We wouldn't be able to do anything to help, so its just nice to have the lifeguards there we can just grab them if we need them," said beach goer Andrea Purvis.

More staff will be added for the holidays. Llifeguards will be on the beach 7 days a week until after Labor Day.

I think I will be going to Atlantic Beach, their lifeguards look a little more hardcore. I watched them make 2 rescues this weekend. They are the best Guard Unit on the island!

I don't know who this is pretending to be me, but this is a true idiot who probably does'nt know the Kitty Hawk and Emerald Isle are about 175-180 miles apart (guessing). At least know your geography and have some map sense before you go pretending to be not just me but anybody else. Other than that, kudos to Emerald Isle.

I have a cousin that lives in Kitty Hawk and his name is Sam. Are you telling me he is not real? Maybe the Sam that made the earlier post was referring to becoming a lifeguard in Kitty Hawk and not Carteret county??? I am guessing you dont even know the "other" Sam so how do you know he is an idiot? He may be but you dont know that. How do you know Sam isnt a woman? I think you are the idiot here. Get over yourself if you can

Excellent! This is great news and takes our beaches up a knotch! We have visitors here from all over the world and not all are strong swimmers or know our currents very well. Good job Atlantic beach and Emerald isle!

Since I am a great surfer, I am also going to apply to be a lifeguard too. I make good money as a CPA but a little bit more on the side will never hurt.

and we need to know this why? being a great surfer has nothing to do with being a lifeguard other than being able to swim, do tell...
