Beach goers will now have an extra sense of security when they head to one local beach. Emerald isle has a new lifeguard program that kicked off this past weekend.
There are 4 lifeguards on the beach. One is at the town's 2 regional beach accesses and two others patrol up and down the beach as well. Last year, there were no certified lifeguards but emergency personnel rode on ATVs. According to officials, there were 67 water rescues last year and 3 drownings with no lifeguards. This year is different and beach goers appreciate it
"A lot of time we see kids go out pretty far out and with little ones. We wouldn't be able to do anything to help, so its just nice to have the lifeguards there we can just grab them if we need them," said beach goer Andrea Purvis.
More staff will be added for the holidays. Llifeguards will be on the beach 7 days a week until after Labor Day.
