Wood Pellet Facility At State Port Gets Final Okay

Another wood pellet operation appears headed to set up shop at a the Morehead City State Port to send the product to Europe.

Council of State members voted Tuesday to give the final sign-off on a deal approved last week by the North Carolina State Ports Authority so a company called WoodFuels can build a $25 million export facility.

The agreement covers up to 20 years, and allows WoodFuels to lease port property to collect, store and load the pellets, which are in high demand in European countries shifting away from coal-burning energy operations to wood.

A similar agreement with another company for the Wilmington port was approved earlier this year.

State officials say the Morehead City deal could result in at least 150 direct and indirect jobs.
