At the veteran's memorial at the Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City families, veterans and city officials gathered to remember all who have served our country.
Mayor Gerald Jones thanked all the service men and women past and present, to allow us to live in the America we know today. Organizers say they hope people continue to celebrate the true message of Memorial Day.
"It's important the community gets involved in this. Over the last couple decades we've looked at this more as a day to go out to the beach, to the malls. What we need to do is to honor these men who have given their lives to let us have the freedom we have today," said American Legion Post 46 Commander Bob Kirk.
Kirk says he was glad to see a good turnout at the ceremony Monday. He says he believes Memorial Day hits home with many people in the community.
