State troopers are looking for witnesses who may have seen a deadly moped accident Thursday afternoon in Carteret County.
The accident happened around 1:15 p.m. on Highway 24 outside of Newport.
Trooper J.A. Tucker says Roger Applewhite, Jr. of Morehead City was killed at the scene. The 39-year-old man was thrown from the moped.
Tucker says a Toyota SUV was westbound on the highway, traveling about 55 miles per hour, when it hit the rear of the scooter. The scooter was going approximately 30 miles per hour.
The Highway Patrol says Mary Thomas of Emerald Isle wasn't hurt in the crash, but was taken to Carteret General as a precaution.
Troopers are still investigating the accident.
