A elderly man who was kayaking in Carteret County has been found safe.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the 71-year-old man intended to kayak to Harkers Island on Thursday. His family called authorities around 9:00 p.m. when he did not return.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Elizabeth City and a 24-foot boat from Fort Macon searched the area, along with deputies from Carteret County.
The Coast Guard says a good Samaritan called deputies around midnight saying that the man approached his home north of Harkers Island and asked for help. The man was taken home by a deputy sheriff after he declined medical treatment.
The Coast Guard says had the man had a way to communicate with his family and first responders, the situation could have been resolved much more quickly.
