Mike Sartain has been selected to lead East Carteret High School's football team and serve as a physical education teacher at the school.
He fills the vacancy created when former head coach Kemp Ewing resigned last month.
Mr. Sartain has been working at West Carteret High School as defensive coordinator for the football team, as a physical education teacher and as the head coach for boys track. He has worked at West Carteret High School for three years.
Incoming East Carteret High School Principal April Lilley made the announcement today and characterizes Mr. Sartain as a dynamic and organized leader. Mrs. Lilley will begin her duties as the new principal July 1, filling the vacancy that will be left when current Principal Ralph Holloway retires June 30.
"Mr. Sartain is very professional and goal oriented," Mrs. Lilley said. "He has demonstrated that he holds students accountable and teaches responsibility both on and off the field. He has experience and has proven himself to be a team builder."
Mrs. Lilley said she is anxious for East Carteret High School students and parents to meet Mr. Sartain and his family. She has planned a watermelon social for Monday, June 27, at 6 p.m. for students interested in playing football and their parents and in meeting the new coach. The free event will take place at East Carteret High School.
Mr. Sartain is ready to hit the ground running and will begin the head football coaching duties immediately.
"I look forward to meeting and working with the students at East Carteret High School and know I will find them to be motivated and excited about the football program. I am anxious to be a part of the Beaufort and Down East communities, and to get to know the parents and spend time with their student athletes as we work together to build a successful program."
Mr. Sartain urges all students interested in participating in the East Carteret High School football team to join him Monday, June 27, for a
9-11 a.m. workout. Students should wear shorts, t-shirts and athletic shoes.
Prior to joining the West Carteret High School staff, Mr. Sartain worked at Southern Lee High School in Sanford as the defensive coordinator and strength coach/physical education teacher. Mr. Sartain holds a bachelor of arts degree in physical education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Western Carolina University.
