Man Drowns Trying To Save Young Nephew

A man drowned Saturday night on the Crystal Coast trying to save his nephew.

Police tell WITN News 59-year-old Josh Lais of Vermont and his family had arrived in Emerald Isle for vacation Saturday and were staying in an oceanfront home on Ocean Drive.

Police say Lais' nine-year-old nephew was having trouble in the water about 8 p.m. Saturday. They tell WITN when Lais went into the water, he began having trouble himself and had to be pulled out.

The Emerald Isle fire department began CPR at the scene, but Lais was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Another person brought the boy out of the water safely.
