Police say a mother alerted them to possible sex crimes after reading her 12-year-old daughter's diary.
Jeffrey Commander of Pine Knoll Shores is charged with indecent liberties with a child.
Emerald Isle police say the victim lives in Ohio and was visiting her grandmother here. They say the 31-year-old Commander was a friend of the victim's family and was visiting them when the sex offense occurred.
Commander was arrested at his home and is free on a $10,000 bond. His first appearance is Wednesday morning.
