A young Marine swimming off the Emerald Isle coast Saturday evening drowned according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard officials say it happened between the Western Beach access and the Emerald Isle pier around 7:30 p.m.
Emerald Isle Police Chief Bill Hargett has identified the Marine as 19-year-old Lance Corporal Esrom Joseph from Scott, Louisiana.
Officials say two friends noticed Joseph was struggling in the water and went to help him. The friends were able to reach him, but then they lost their grip. The friends were able to make it back to shore safely, but the Marine was not.
Joseph was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines at Camp Lejeune.
