A drug suspect who took off from the Carteret County courthouse during lunch recess as his trial was about to start is now behind bars after being convicted on two felonies.
District attorney Scott Thomas says 27-year-old Brandon Elps of Beaufort, was convicted this week in Carteret County Superior Court of two felony offenses.
Elps was originally charged with conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine, but bolted from the courthouse just prior to the start of his trial. He was eventually arrested and charged with failure to appear. He was convicted this week on both charges.
Elps was sentenced up to a year for the drug charge and given a suspended sentence between 6 and 17 months for the failure to appear.
