A crash between a mail truck and an SUV closed down a major highway in Havelock this afternoon.
The crash happened shortly after 1:00 p.m. in the 400 block of Greenfield Heights Boulevard. Both lanes of that highway remain closed.
The wreck involved a U.S. Postal Service vehicle and a small SUV. The postal vehicle landed on its side in a ditch.
Steven Morton of Swansboro, the postal employee, was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center, while the other driver, Janie Queen of Havelock, was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern.
State Troopers say the postal vehicle was stopping and delivering mail when the small SUV came up on the truck and tried to swerve. The driver hit the back left corner of the postal vehicle. It spun around and ended up in the ditch while the SUV rolled at least once.
Queen was charged with driving left of center and failure to reduce speed.
