Guardian Of Crystal Coast Retires

After more than 20 years in service, a Coast Guard ship was retired on Friday.

The Cutter Block Island was decommissioned in a ceremony Friday afternoon at Atlantic Beach in Carteret County.

The 110-foot patrol boat was known as the Guardian of the Crystal Coast and was commissioned in November 1991.

According to the Coast Guard, the Cutter Block Island was a multi-mission patrol craft capable of search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, environmental protection, and homeland security.
