Gov. Perdue: Prepare For Irene, But Beaches Still Open For Business

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Gov. Beverly Perdue wants North Carolina citizens to prepare for Hurricane Irene should it come ashore this weekend but says vacationers shouldn't scratch coastal travel plans just yet.

Perdue said Tuesday it's still too early to determine with certainty if and where Irene will touch the state and what effects its rain and high winds could have. She said officials will have a better idea Thursday what people should do. Perdue said until then North Carolina is open for business as the summer vacation season winds down.

She says North Carolina's emergency management operations are the best in the nation and will be ready to respond to the hurricane.

Federal emergency officials are to arrive in the state Wednesday. The state's 24-hour-a-day emergency operations center should open a day later.

Sunshine--I get your comparison but actually it was Sheriff Brody that warned everyone about the shark in Jaws, it was Mayor Vaughn that wanted to keep the beaches open. That being said, rather a foolish statement on Bev's part.

Govenor Purdue: Are you related to Mayor Brody in the movie "Jaws" He didn't want to shut the beaches down because of a shark...you don't want to shut them down because of a hurricane, but tell the residents to move. I suppose you think tourists are expendable

Yep, that is one dumb statement for sure. "Keep beaching it tourists.....hey NC residents start preparing for the worst". So Bevie, how do the folks that live down there and make their living off tourism do both???

It was actually Sheriff Brody in the movie that was warning everyone about the shark, the mayor's name was Larry Vaughn. Anyway, I agree this is a pretty stupid statement by Bev, but it doesn't exactly surprise me coming from her.

Having seen the governors track record, what ever she says we need to do, I am going to do the exact opposite.
