Five people, including two children, had to be hospitalized Saturday morning after a four vehicle crash in Newport.
The crash occurred around 9:10 a.m. at the intersection of Chatham St. and Merrywoods Dr. at the entrance to White Sands Subdivision.
According to Newport Police a Ford Explorer driven by Leonard Jimenez of Morehead City was stopped on Chatham St. waiting to turn into the White Sands Subdivision. A Chevrolet S-10 driven by James Andrews Jr. of Newport was stopped behind the Explorer. Police say a GMC Sierra pickup driven by April Thomas of Newport failed to stop and slammed into the rear of the Chevrolet S-10 forcing it into the rear of the Explorer.
They say the Explorer was forced into the opposing lane of traffic striking a Mazda Protege driven by Gladys McIsaac of Newport who was attempting to make a right turn into the subdivision.
Five people were transported to Carteret General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Police say speed appears to be a factor in the crash. They continue to investigate. Charges are pending.
