Police have now released the names of two young women killed in a fiery crash late Tuesday night.
Killed was the driver, 20-year-old Kirsten McDonald of Morehead City and passenger, 20-year-old Ashlyn Morrow on Pine Knoll Shores.
The crash happened around 11:00 p.m. on Business Drive in Morehead City.
Police say the 2000 Volvo erupted in flames in a matter of seconds and that the two women were trapped. Two backseat passengers, 18-year-old Anthony Hester II and 17-year-old Alvin Hester, ran from the scene. Police say they were later interviewed at Carteret General Hospital.
Speed was a factor in the crash, according to police. They are waiting on toxicology reports to determine if there were any other factors in this fatal crash.
A make-shift memorial has been set up where two people died in a fiery crash Tuesday night.
Major Garland Terry with the Morehead City Police Department says the single-vehicle wreck happened around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday on Business Drive, near Miller Farm Road.
Witnesses tell police they heard the crash. When they looked outside they saw the vehicle on fire.
Police say speed was a factor. They also confirm there were two men in the backseat of the vehicle who ran from the accident. The two went to Carteret General Hospital, where police have spoken to them.
The names of the victims have not been released by police at this time.
