Carteret County has declared a state of emergency and has told all visitors and non-residents to leave.

Travel on the Atlantic Beach bridge and the Emerald Isle bridge was restricted at 8 p.m. Friday.

The county has also issued a mandatory evacuation for all residents of Bogue Banks. That includes residents of Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Pine Knoll Shores and other beach communities along the Crystal Coast. There will also be a curfew for Bogue Banks starting at 8:00 p.m. Friday.

Shelters are now opened at Newport Middle, West Carteret High, Atlantic Elementary and Beaufort Elementary schools.

Funny how Carteret County is AB and EI. What about the folks Down East? And I'm not talking about people just east of I-95 but those east of East Carteret High School. No mention of the real locals, not just ones retiring and moving [there]. Oh wait, those from NJ are proud and pizza stained!

There is a reason they shut down the bridges. If the wind speed gets too high, it's too dangerous, a car can be blown off.

It's amazing they are making it a mandatory evacuation so late in the game. Should have started this today! It's way to late to have it start tomarrow, traffic is going to be misrerable now! Thanks "officials"!

You could have left whenever you wanted to. You don't have to wait to be told to! If the officials had made the call too early, you would have complained they cleared the island for no reason! Be responsible for yourself.

gee, and you haven't been paying attention to anything else this whole time, and you have to wait to be told to leave. Do you also have to be told to go to the bathroom? weird person.
