Dwarf Sperm Whale Washes Up On Crystal Coast

Authorities are researching why a dwarf sperm whale died, with it washing ashore in Pine Knoll Shores this past weekend.

The 452 pound mature male was discovered Saturday morning. Teams from the North Carolina Maritime Museum, Trinity Center, NC State's Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, NC Marine Fisheries, and Carteret Community College spent all day Sunday researching its death before the whale was buried.

The curator from the Maritime Museum says it is very rare that these types of whales strand themselves. Keith Rittmaster says the 7-1/2 foot long whale recently died and it provided them a unique opportunity to learn more about the species.

So far, there are no obvious signs of death.
