A woman was jailed after police say she stole tens of thousands of dollars from her mother and has refused to pay for the woman's extended care.
Martha Loftin of Beaufort is charged with felony exploitation of an elderly person. They estimate $70,000 of her mother's benefits and money was taken.
Beaufort police began their investigation in December when the Department of Social Services contacted them and said Loftin's mother was in an extended care facility. The facility said since the mother arrived in February 2011 they hadn't received any payments for her care.
The investigation revealed that Loftin had power of attorney for her mother, but the courts had taken that away. Police say despite that, Loftin continued to cash her mother's month Social Security checks, as well as cashing a substantial check from the woman's dead husband's estate.
The woman's 80-year-old mother passed away last Saturday, according to police.
The 55-year-old Loftin was jailed on a $15,000 bond.
