Man Threatened Morehead City VA Clinic, Found With Loaded AK-47

Deputies say a man threatened to shoot up the Veterans Clinic in Morehead City today. When pulled over, deputies say they found a loaded AK-47 and two fully loaded magazines in his vehicle.

Willie Austin of Cedar Island Road is charged with one count of going armed to the terror of the public and communicating threats. Deputies say the 63-year-old man called in and threaten to "shoot the place up" with an AK-47. Deputies immediately began searching for the man and his vehicle.

Several officers were stationed at the clinic, while deputies spotted his vehicle on Old Cedar Island Road. In addition to the AK-47 in the vehicle, at the man's home they found another AK-47, a 12 gauge shotgun and over 1,000 round of ammo.

Bond for Austin was set at $15,000 and he has a court date of January 30th on the charges.

I hear a lot of complaints about the care the Veterans are receiving from the VA. I am a Veteran and a VA employee. I know it is not perfect and sometimes I am upset with the bureaucracy that is VA healthcare. With that said, the VA provides the best they can with the limited funds they are given. The VA is the largest healthcare organization in the world and has less funds than most other health care institutions have to work with. Despite this, they continue to have some of the top quality of care ratings out of the health care community. One more thing I want to note is this. The employees that work at the VA know they are at a federal institution and therefore are a target for terrorism, homegrown or foreign. They should be applauded for their choice to serve our nation's heroes inspite of the possible threats!

You're right, the employees at the VA office in Morehead City (and likely any other branch) are not to blame. It's our politicians and those who continue to elect them who are to blame. The folks who work at these facilities are just working Joes like you and me. Some, like this poster, are vets themselves. My hat's off to you for trying to help in what has become a very bad situation. It's all those fat, rich and lazy politicians who people should be going after. Give the vets the same health care that our politicians get.

the lack of support for the morehead city va is upsetting, another incident like this, it will CLOSE . Lynette, I would suggest that all of your family memebers get their treatment from Dr Famous at the VA at the Durham facility. Please do that immediately. Demand it from Durham.

Didn't read all the comments so maybe someone already brought this up. Could be he realized the only way to get the treatment he needed was to be incarcerated, sad as it is our govt provides better medical care to convicts than those who have put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms.

If being a "moron" equals the right to shoot someone then there wouldn't be many people left to place posts online

The comments on this story are vastly different from the comments section on the teen that was killed in greenville. This man could have killed other veterans who were at the VA looking for help. I guess you aren't considered a "thug" when you're pulling your gun out on federal employees or the federal government. Everybody gets a raw deal in this country at some point or another whether you served the country or not. There is always another way of getting results than violence. The government...state and federal will not make changes until the masses make them. One lone man with an AK-47 won't change a thing...He'll just hurt innocent people who are at the wrong place at the wrong time. Sounds like a "thug" to me.

Did he have an actual AK-47, which is capable of full automatic fire? Or, did he have an AK-74, MAK -90, or another variation capable of only semi automatic fire? No notice that he had a permit for a Class 3 automatic firearm. Just because it looks like an AK-47, doesn't mean that it is one.

Yes, they both were AK-47's, and no all true AK-47's are "NOT" full auto! An AK-74 is a totally different gun! Mak 90 also has different properties. however the guns on the news channel are true AK-47 rifles. This type of non-sense is bad publicity for law abiding citizens, who love to own and shoot the military type rifles! That man clearly does not need to ever own another gun. Evidently you know very little about military type rifles!

Sorry Gerry, but you couldn't be more wrong! Most Ak's are not full auto and the other guns you mentioned are not full auto either. You should get your facts right before you make a statement. and 1'000 rounds are just starters. Real owners have upwards of 100'000 rounds and reload most of their stuff!

Not surprised, this office has a bunch of morons working there. They do not know how to treat Vets and they never know anything. They don't want to help and they cannot answer a question. This guy was probably very frustrated with them. I was and I will never bother with them again. They need people who care about Vets working there.

THANK YOUR BRO FOR ME PROUD, JOB WELL DONE. MY FAMILY WORKS FOR VA. ALL OF US HAVE NOTHING BUT THE HIGHEST ADMIRATION & RESPECT FOR ALL THOSE WHO SACRIFICED AND SERVED OUR COUNTRY. THAT BEING SAID IT IS A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS WHEN I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEIR SAFETY EVERY DAY FROM SOME WHO CONDONE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR.I CAN SYMPATHIZE WITH THEM ABOUT FEELING THEIR NEEDS ARE NOT BEING MET, BUT IT IS FREE. SOMETIMES FREE DOES NOT MEAN THE BEST. HECK, SOMETIMES PAYING FOR PREMIUM DOES NOT MEAN THE BEST. IF YOU THINK IT IS BAD NOW JUST WAIT TILL FREE HEALTH CARE COMES TO REST OF COUNTRY, THEN WE WILL SEE A WHOLE LOT MORE OF THIS AS HEALTHCARE AS WE KNOW IT GRINDS TO A HALT.GOD HELP US ALL!

So, if I understand you correctly, let's just all get in a pile and kill anybody, willy nilly, because we're not happy with our lot in life...is that right? I thought this was a civilized country, but it is quickly becoming a country of dissents, rioters, thieves, and murderers. I respect our military, but not for actions like this one.

Just another method of getting treated, and getting a bump in rating. Show up "crazy". It'll work every time.
