Another proposed median on U.S. 70 has some business owners in Morehead City upset.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation held a a public meeting Monday night at Carteret County Community College to discuss constructing a raised median fro 2.7 miles from Willis Road to Bank Street along U.S. 70 in Morehead City. The project includes median openings with turn lanes at six to seven additional locations. No changes are proposed at the existing traffic signals.
The DOT says the project is intended to improve safety along that stretch of the highway. A study of a five year period released in 2008 showed there were 352 crashes, but some business owners say the median is not necessary and will only hurt them in the long run because it will restrict access.
"The road is very heavily traveled but as I mentioned in the last DOT meeting I attended in the plus 40 years here we've never had one of our customers either bringing a boat to us or leaving from our place ever have a wreck of any type with their car or their boat," said Boats Inc. Owner Chris Davies.
