Workers and volunteers at the Carteret County Humane Society animal shelter are working hard to keep the dogs, who have no air conditioning cool in their kennels.

Large fans keep air circulating as volunteers keep water bowls full. When dogs get a chance to go out back, they head straight for the kiddie pool. The cats and smaller dogs are able to fit inside where there's air conditioning, but the bigger dogs have to live with the hot days. Staff and volunteers walk through the kennel often looking for signs of heat exhaustion.

"Always checking their activity level, making sure they're still active, checking their stool samples their food bowls and stuff like that," said shelter manager Candace Christopherson

Chirstopherson says so far the dogs have remained fairly healthy despite the heat. The shelter says they need donations of large fans, ice for the dog's water, and kiddie pools.
