The Carteret County Health Department opened its flu clinic Monday and people were already showing up to get vaccinated.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone over six months of age be vaccinated against the flu.
Mary Fournier with the Carteret County Health Department says, "By late September and early October is really the optimum time because it takes at least 2 weeks for the vaccine to provide your immune system to really kick in."
Shots are $30.00 at the Carteret County Health Department if you don't have Medicaid or Medicare part B.
You can also check with the health department in the county where you live.
Shots are also available at many local pharmacies and doctors offices.
