Three people who abandoned their sinking sailboat were rescued some 35 miles south of Fort Macon this afternoon.
The Coast Guard says it received a mayday call around noon from the "Reel Safe" saying they were taking on water.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter that was training in the area was diverted and an urgent message was broadcast to mariners.
A 485-foot cargo ship, the "Islandia" diverted its course and arrived about an hour later to rescue the three. About fifteen minutes later, the Coast Guard helicopter arrived and hoisted the trio aboard, taking them to Fort Macon.
No one was injured.
