An inn clerk told co-workers that he was forced at gunpoint to break into the business and steal $55 from the cash register. The only problem is police say a surveillance camera doesn't back up the story.
James Talbott of Morehead City is charged with breaking and entering and larceny, along with larceny by employee.
Beaufort police say it happened Saturday morning at the Beaufort Inn on Ann Street. They say another employee came to work and found money missing from the register. After reviewing the surveillance video, they called Talbott who said he was taken at gunpoint to the inn to steal the money.
But police say the video shows the 29-year-old being very friendly with the woman and no gun was ever seen. They say it also shows the women leaving the office and then Talbott locking up. No report of any kidnapping or robbery was ever reported.
Talbott was jailed on a $5,000 secured bond.
