Now that the beach season is heating up businesses near the closed Sheraton Atlantic Beach say they are definitely feeling the impact.
The Sheraton says it is closed for renovations due to Hurricane Irene and currently plans to reopen in September.
Workers at the nearby Shell Gas Station say business for them is off 20 to 30 percent. The Dairy Queen in the same area says their business is off 25 percent.
While businesses that rely on Sheraton customers say their traffic had gone down, competing businesses of the Sheraton's say theirs has gone up. Officials at the Seahawk Inn say their numbers have been up by almost 20 percent since the Sheraton closed.
Even so, those at the Shell Station and Dairy Queen say that still has not filled the void left by the Sheraton. Both businesses say they've increased advertising and dropped prices in hopes of bringing in more customers.
