Boy Scout Scammer Pleads Guilty, Heading To Prison

A man who authorities say scammed people into believing he was selling Boy Scout raffle tickets is heading to prison.

Matthew Willis of Davis pleaded guilty to three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

District Attorney Scott Thomas says in late August, Willis traveled around Carteret County selling raffle tickets. Thomas says Willis tricked 15 people into paying $10 for the raffle tickets to win shrimp, all to benefit the Boy Scouts.

The Boy Scouts got wind of the fundraiser and contacted deputies.

At the time of his arrest, Willis was on probation for safecracking and felony larceny.

He will now serve between 14 and 27 months in prison, first serving his probation sentence and then a 6 to 17 month term for the scam conviction.
