Emerald Isle Residents Concerned About Landmark Pier As Irene Approaches

Up and down Emerald Isle vistors evacuated Thursday and residents got ready to leave. Many are worried about one of the landmarks of the town- the Bogue Inlet fishing pier.

One business owner says he fears if something happens to it during hurricane Irene it will have a huge economic impact on the town.

The pier is a staple of the Emerald Isle landscape. Owner of
Pelican's Snowballs Bernie Arnold says he remembers visiting the pier as a child. He kept his shop closed Thursday as he prepared for Irene. Arnold says he put his coolers on risers and is hoping for the best for his shop and the pier.

"The pier is just tremendous for out the whole town of Emerald
Isle so it's a critial thing. It's a big draw. It's one of the few
piers left in this area, and damage to the pier affects everybody that's here. This is now something that we can't afford to lose.. We're all crossing our fingers and hoping we come through it unscathed," said Arnold.

The Bouge Inlet fishing pier was built in 1957.

Just over a week ago my family was fishing on this pier and watching sharks circling the pilings. It is a special place for all of us and we all hope that it is rebuilt ASAP.

Quit Crying, grow up! If you fish, you don't have to pay and you only pay on the weekends. So stop your moaning and groaning. If you don't want to pay, park somewhere else. The pier is a landmark. When I was little there were 3 piers on the island and now only the Bogue Inlet Pier is left. We go there every year and love being on the pier. I pray that it will be okay!

Quit crying....the revenue made off of the "pay to park" for EI will be more than enough to build a new concrete structure. That is if you can the greedy money baggers to turn loose of it....and I would think they would since it is such a "landmark" for the town.

let the yankees pay for a new one to be built, since they wanted PAY TO PARK.

Most models have it aiming at Hatteras currently. That's a tough old pier.
