Officials in Carteret County are investigating a fire on a boat in Atlantic early Wednesday morning.
Carteret County Emergency Services Director Jo Ann Smith says she was notified of the fire around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Fire Marshall Ben Barnett says the boat that was docked in the Atlantic Harbor in the town of Atlantic is destroyed, so much so that he can't tell what type of boat it is. It's not clear if the vessel belonged to an individual or a business. Even several hours after the fire, Barnett said the fire was still smoldering a bit.
Smith says the boat was set adrift from where it was docked in the harbor and ran aground somewhere in the waterway.
It's not clear at this time who owns the boat, though Barnett said the owner was believed to be out of state.
No injuries have been reported.
