Cool Town Contest Ends In Tie

Cool Town Contest Ends In Tie

Beaufort Virtually Tied In Contest, Voting Ends At Midnight

Beaufort Wants To Be "America's Coolest Small Town"

It was so close that a tie has been declared in a national contest to decide the coolest small town in America. Technically, Beaufort won the Budget Travel Magazine contest.

The Carteret County town had been locked in a fierce online battle with Hammondsport, New York in online voting for the top spot. So much that voting last night crashed the magazine's web site and they declared it a tie. The magazine says since voters in several parts of the country were locked out due to the crash, Budget travel editors decided it was impossible to determine who would have won without the crash.

In the end, 360,000 votes were cast with Beaufort 36.2% and Hammondsport with 36%, the closest ever in the magazine's contest.

Beaufort now has bragging rights as the country's coolest small town. The town says while it's a little disappointed the contest ended in a tie and an all out winner wasn't declared, a tie and shutting down their web site is pretty awesome.
