Atlantic Beach is hoping a grant will help them provide more family entertainment.
The town applied for a $500,000 grant with the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to help the town build phase one of a million-dollar park in the Atlantic Beach Commons.
The first phase will have a mini-golf course, a new playground, and a skate park.
The town is asking for letters of support from the public to help get the grant. Mayor Trace Cooper says so far they've received more than 200. "For a resort community this is not just parks and recreation, this is economic development for us, there are, you know we're competing with other resort areas for vacation dollars and people come to the beach they expect to see amenities like putt putt and water parks and if we don't provide those things they'll go somewhere else."
Cooper says the town would like to start construction later this year and says with or without the grant- there will be additions to the park.
