An elderly couple is recovering after having to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation, after their home went up in flames.
Atlantic Beach Fire Chief Adam Snyder says that they got the call to a home at 406 Lee Drive. Snyder says that the fire started at the duplex on a wooden front porch deck and climbed a wall into the couple’s attic. The home is a total loss. Thanks to an aggressive attack, Snyder says firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the second home of the duplex.
Officials say the cause of the fire is undetermined at this point, but it is believed to be accidental.
The couple was taken to Carteret General Hospital for smoke inhalation. They are expected to be okay.
Chief Snyder says that the Red Cross and the Salvation Army were alerted to the situation. The two are also said to have family in the area.
Pine Knoll Shores, Morehead City, and Indian Beach Fire Departments all responded to the blaze.
