Eastern Carolina Businessman Heads To Jail On Tax Charges

An Eastern Carolina businessman is headed to jail after pleading guilty to two counts of willful failure to pay sales tax.

Raymond Lawrence, Jr., 55, of Morehead City, was sentenced to two consecutive 45-day jail terms. Lawrence was ordered to pay restitution of $28,000 and a $5,000 fine.

An investigation by a special agent with the NC Department of Revenue found that during the period Jan. 1, 2004 through Dec. 31, 2005, Lawrence, the owner of Shop N Wash of Morehead City, collected North Carolina and Carteret County sales tax that he failed to remit to the Department of Revenue.

Lawrence paid $28,000 in restitution to the Department of Revenue while in court.

The charges against Lawrence resulted from an investigation by an auditor in the Department's Wilmington Examination office and a special agent with the Department's Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.

Wow its funny how so many people have opinions but they dont know the circumstances. If any of you knew what was involved in running a business your opinion may change. I happen to know this man and I know for a fact he was not knowingly avoiding paying taxes. No one is perfect and people make mistakes especially when you have the stress of running your own business and in the middle of it all your family bails on you and you have no help. Who is to say this man is guilty? Who is to say it wasnt just a simple bookwork error? Just because you cut a deal because you know you won't win doesnt mean your guilty it just means your smart.

I reckon this guy must have thought he wont going to be investigated or could have got by with it. Then again, arrest all the welfare system abusers and illegal immigrants for doing the same thing (or worse). Rod, have you forgot all these illegal immigrants (mostly Mexicans and Cubans) that Obama is letting off the hook? Have you forgot members of his administration that got caught not paying their taxes? Regardless, this guy should have paid his taxes just to avoid jail.

If anyone bothered to read the story, hard to tell from the posts, he committed his crimes during the second President Bush's terms! We all know his administation did a much better time spending tax dollars than this administation," Heck of a job Brownie" and the proof of bogus reasons for war happened around this time. If he was protesting, so was Al Capone, for he chose to not declare all of his income as well.
