Eight Hour Search For Child Turns Up Nothing

An eight hour search for a five or six year old boy ended with authorities having no luck in locating the child.

Carteret County deputies say two employees of I.C. Countertops Granite & Marble Company say they spotted the child in a parking lot playing with a cat around 3:45 a.m. When they approached the boy he ran away.

Authorities first searched the grounds, buildings, dry dock boats and wooded areas near the business. Eventually the search was expanded to the entire Jarrett Bay Boat Works industrial park site that included some 25 people. The U.S. Coast Guard and a state Highway Patrol helicopter joined the search.

The only description was that the child was black and either five or six years old.

Deputies say they never received a report of missing children and believe the child lived close by and made it back home with his parents discovering him missing.
