Hands Across the Sand

Thousands across the country, including more than a hundred from the East, joined hands today to take a stand against offshore drilling.

Organizers of the protest call it “Hands Across the Sand.”

In Carteret County, more than a hundred residents and visitors met at Atlantic Beach this morning to protest.

WITN talked with some of the protestors who say they oppose offshore drilling and they want our state’s ocean, marine life, and coastal economy protected.

They also said they were there to show support for those suffering in the Gulf Coast.

Some of you ignorant people need to understand, your comments arent going to change the fact that the oil spill happened. Its just like voting... you think your vote really made a difference? Dont think so. Get a grip. Everyones entitled to their own opinion.

Why can't we just put a wind farm in the middle of the Pamlico Sound? There is always wind there, so I am sure that a wind farm there could easily power the entire outer banks, eventually. (see Cape Cod Wind farm proposal). Even a step such as that would provide much needed jobs to Pamlico, Hyde, and Dare counties (installation, maintenance, and professional), and would reduce the energy costs to those on the coast who already pay much more than everyone else. I realize that we need oil and will ALWAYS need oil, but I do also think that taking steps to reduce our consumption can't hurt (environmentally and economically speaking). Just a thought, but I am sure someone here will find a flaw in my thinking...

Now that we see how oil spills are handled in our country why even risk have it happen on the NC coast. For eveyone who loves big government, this is the result of big government....nothing gets done in a timely manner (Republican or Democrat). Too much red tape and finger pointing.

Obama Snake Oil, go pound sand. The only hooey is your paranoia and flat out ridiculousness. That oil spill is no more Obama's Fault than it was Bushes fault Katrina rolled in. At least I'm not so stupid and moronic to actually think either which is more than can be said for you. You have no basis but your opinions about who's fault this is. This is BP's fault, and rather than go a little further in depth for who's to blame such as its contractors etc...you just blame Obama... fine, think as you wish. Stupid is as stupid does. Furthermore, as I said previously, we ALREADY went through DOUBLE the energy costs about 4 years ago for extended periods of time..... Out of state folks did not stop coming to the Outer Banks, it doesnt keep folks away....OIL ON THE BEACHES would. So again, if you didn't like the little Hands in the Sand love......stay inland, don't bother coming down here. Bunch of absolute crazy hateful people.
