Local Student Named All-USA College Academic Winner

Twenty students from across the nation are selected for USA TODAY's 2010 All-USA College Academic First Team, and one of those students is from eastern Carolina.

Twenty-two year old James Waters, from Morehead City in Carteret County, is an Academic All Star for his successes in and out of the classroom.

Waters studied statistics and economics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Among his studies, Waters wrote his thesis on the effects of Nicaragua's free trade zones on education, learned some Japanese for a research trip on World War II and studied Buddhism in Nepal.

A panel of judges made up of hundred of college juniors and seniors selected these all-star students. Each All-USA College Academic First Team member receives a $2,500 cash reward.

You tainted it by telling Duke to go to He**. And you can also "say" anything up here. I could say I graduated from Yale, and how could you know any better? But I did not graduate from neither Duke, Carolina or Yale. I have a nursing degree from a community college and proud of it. And I also hate to inform you a degree from Duke is more impressive than Carolina any day. If you don't know that then google it. So not so wise one how about congratulate the young man and leave it at that.

Classy Duke fan? Let's not taint the discussion board of my fellow alum. I have nothing to prove to you; my degree from Carolina says enough! :] Let's see how classy you really are...

I just love losers who live and breathe being a fan of a college they've probably never even seen in person. I bet it ruins your whole year if they don't make the tournament. Get a life "wise one". And from what I've been hearing about your basketball program dead is a good word to use. Davis left, the Wear brothers transferred and your coach sucks.

I'm a tar heel born. I'm a tar heel bred. And when I die, I'm a tar heel dead. So it's RAH-RAH Car'lina lina. RAH RAH Car'lina lina. RAH RAH Car'lina. Go to H*ll Duke! Nice way to bring honor to your alma mater! Go Heels!

Congratulations to him. :-) I love seeing young people doing such great things with their lives. (No matter what school they come from.) Now, I can't help myself, but I have to say...IT'S NOT ONE WORD tarheels, it's two Tar Heels!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry this annoys me, but it does. Have a good day

It's only showing your ignorance by posting anything to do with a "sport" rivalry. And I bet anything neither person attended a community college, let alone Duke, Carolina or ECU.

We Tar heels have brains and lives; most of us have a good balance of the two. Don't confuse us with the dookies!

I have to agree w/OutsideLookingIn this young man worked very hard and has earned this award, why would you post negative comments that have absoulty nothing to do with this story? If you have nothing nice to say keep your comments to yourself. I would like to congratulate this young man for working very hard to earn such a wonderful honor. You have done Eastern NC proud!!!!!!
