QAR Shipwreck Artifacts Preserved While Underwater

Archaeologists are trying an experimental method to preserve artifacts from the shipwreck believed to be the flagship of the pirate Blackbeard that sits off North Carolina's coast.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported that staff from the North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Branch went on a three-day expedition last week to preserve parts of the Queen Anne's Revenge while the artifacts are on the sea floor.

Project director Mark Wilde Ramsing says aluminum rods were attached to several anchors and a cannon to change the electrochemical process that corrodes iron in saltwater. Ramsing hopes the rods will reduce or reverse the amount of salt absorbed by the iron objects.

He says archaeologists hope to save time by beginning the preservation underwater. The state hopes to retrieve the artifacts by 2013.

I think it's best to look at it for the long term. In the scheme of things a) it's a relatively small investment, b) it will contribute to the understanding and appreciation of the local culture and history, something that's becoming increasingly important as Walmarts, McDonalds's and the like work to thoroughly saturate every area of the country making every place look like every other place.

Don't get me wrong--I am all for saving old stuff with history attached. But really -this money is comming from some grant???? That money could be better put to use than this. And the grant comes from where??? The bottom line is tax payers. I could find better to spend my hard earned money than this. What good is trying to bring this up? Yes we all know the history on Blackbeard--all of this want change the man he was nor bring him back--can't we just let it go???
