Celebration To Honor Beaufort Astronaut

A celebration in honor of a former Eastern Carolina astronaut was held in Carteret County Thursday.

The Michael J. Smith mini-museum opened Thursday at Beaufort Elementary School on the anniversary of the day the space shuttle Challenger was destroyed in an explosion.

The former astronaut, Navy pilot and Beaufort native was pilot of the shuttle when it exploded on January 28th 1986.

All seven crew members including Smith died. Hundreds of students listened to Smith's relatives talk about his achievements.

Many of them still live in Beaufort.

Wolcott says the museum is a valuable learning tool and can assist students in several classes.
