Red Flags Up On Crystal Coast Beaches

Tropical Storm Danny has prompted authorities to post red flags at some beaches along the Crystal Coast.

Red flags went up Friday morning along Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle in Carteret County, warning people to stay out of the water.

The red flags mean people cannot get in water above their waist. Already officials have been pulling swimmers out of the water.

Carteret County Emergency Services says dangerous rip currents and high surf advisories associated with Tropical Storm Danny have prompted the warnings.

The red flags on the beach will remain until Saturday.

"It is important that citizens continue to monitor Danny as any changes in the track or intensity would lead to changes in the impacts for our area,.” said Jo Ann Smith, emergency services director.

Waves are also strong along beaches in Onslow and Pender counties, but so far there are no reports of those beaches being closed to swimmers.
