Kids Play With Rabid Bat

A Newport mother called the Carteret County Health Department Monday to report her four year old daughter and another child had been playing with a live bat.

The mom told health officials the kids picked the bat off the ground in their backyard and one of the children may have placed it under their shirt.

Animal control sent the bat off to the State Laboratory of Public Health and received word Tuesday the bat is positive for rabies.

Only one of the children received shots after coming in contact with the bat.

I think that was very dangerous for to have kids of any age playing with such a dangerous animal as a bat. If I were the parent they would have never been anywhere close to that rabid animal. I do not reccomend anyone to play with a animal that their not sure if it has a disease or not.

with bats their teeth are so fine, many people do not relize they have been bit. Also contact with the salava of rabid animal can cause expose to the virus.

I figured you could only get Rabies if you were bit by the rabid animal. You can get rabies from just picking it up?

The only test for rabies is the brain of the dead person or animal, that is why you take the shots. Did this child die?

What do you mean "after testing"---there is not a test for rabies, that's why you have to go through a series of shots?????? I should know, I've already been through them.
