Its a hot button issue, that nearly everyone is impacted by: The school start date in our state

A bill to change that and allow school systems to start school as early as August 8th passed in the State House of Representatives and now moves to the Senate.

It may seem like a mere two weeks but tourism officials say it could be detrimental to the industry.

Carteret County is a huge supporter of the Save Our Summers-NC Grassroots organization pushing to keep a later August start date.

Lohr says during that two weeks she believes tourists may spend 250-thousand to a half million dollars, which is money they would lose if the school start date is moved up.
