FIRST ON WITN: Furloughs, Cuts Coming To Carteret County Schools

Furloughs and some layoffs are coming to a school system here in the East.

Three central office positions will be eliminated at Carteret County Schools, while 12-month employees will be furloughed for at least two days. That includes central office staff, principals, assistant principals, maintenance, transportation of custodial staff.

The school system will also furlough all central office and school clerical staff July 2nd, plus another 16 hours in July.

Carteret County also will reduce some 12-month staff to 11 month employees and eliminating some summer employment.

The school system says between 80 and 85% of their budget is for employee salaries and benefits.

Teachers, who are state employees, are already under the governor's mandated .5% pay cut.

Superintendent Dr. Dan Novey says with the system-wide reductions announced they will save between 20 and 25 positions that otherwise would be been cut.

Why are only 12-month employees affected? All employees should have furloughed hours because these additional 20 hours are saving jobs of 10-month employess, too.

I am disappointed with Gov Perdue....we, the people, elected a person to head the state education and apparently the Gov did not like that so she created a new position, which stripped the authorization of the person that was elected. So how can the Gov cut state workers pay when she is paying TWO people for basically the same job....how does she justify this. She also is trying to strip the funds from the lottery from going to the school system.......please ask her to justify her actions.

I agree, there is no reason a salary for any state worker should exceed 100,00, its ridiculous

When some of the county superintentents make more than 200K per year, no wonder their is little money left for the kids.
