A convicted sex offender who moved to our area and didn't register with police got caught Tuesday.

38 year old Timothy Smith formerly of Maryland moved to the Bogue Pines Mobile Home Park a few months ago.

Carteret County Sheriffs Deputies arrested him and put him in jail on a 51-thousand dollar bond. Deputies say Smith was convicted in 1995 for a "third degree" sex offense that happened in Maryland with a 12 year old girl.

Smith was eventually released on probation but violated it in 2007 when he moved and didn't register with police. Smith was also wanted for burglary and theft.

This man did a crime and the system let him out. All he had to do was register when he moved. He didn't do it. Put him back in jail for his full term. If they don't he will molest again.

To ROB: Never have I heard anything so rediculous as your post. I have little girls and I would like to know who is around. Besides, the law states that anyone must register. However, I realize that you are from the country of Va.

Rob must not have any children. I wish they would do more than that when they fail to register think goodness the police is doing their job. This person sounds like a lot of trouble... burglary, theft and not registering as he is suppose to. Atleast the police has brought some attention to him so parents can watch him instead of finding out once some poor child was harmed.

Rob in VA... Did you NOT read the last line where it says he is also wanted for burglary and theft? Do you think that burglers and thiefs should be released as well? Would you consider your local cops over reacting if they see someone stealing your property and actually did their job by arresting them? Maybe you should read the story again before you make such ridiculous statements.

Why was this mans bond set at $51,000 ? That is very stupid on just a failed to register charge. Just re-register him and release him on a summons. What a waste of man hours and tax payers money. What other serious crimes went unfound while all this was focused on him? We don't let our police force get carried-away on small time things like this....if this happen here....we would ask for our money back or fire the cops trying to pose as false hero's on this. I hope the judge release's him just for them over-reacting.
