School Start Date Debate

We should find out Wednesday if the push to give counties more control of when they start school in the fall has any legs.

A state house committee is scheduled to look at two bills Wednesday that seek to give specific counties in the western part of the state the ability to start school in early and mid-August.

State law requires school to start August 25 or later, after a big battle of school calendars in 2004.

Supporters of starting school earlier have said it will allow students to take final exams before winter break.

Those who support the summer stretching through August say it gives families the opportunity to vacation in August. Others argue it extends the amount of time teens can earn an income working summer jobs.

Don't some of you realize that if your kids miss school due to a vacation then that is not being responsible on your part? Kids can't just schedule a vacation when they want either, they are subject to the rules set by the school. While I agree spending family time together is a good experience, so is letting kids know now that life does not rotate around their vacation. What are they going to do when they get in the workforce?

It is difficult to schedule a vacation indeed. Everyone can't just take vacation when they want but are subject to the rules set by employment. After working myself in the dirt so others can have half of my paycheck (thank you Obama)I like to know that there is a week off from the Democrat circus. Don't school officials realize that children will simply miss school if a vacation involving the entire family is scheduled. And for those who stay at home, I guess you would like the free babysitting at the hands of the teachers.

What a novel idea -- letting local school boards determine local school calendars. Obviously this will never work. The current system of having Sen. Basnight (through his puppets in the General Assembly) base the start of schools statewide on what generates the most business for Dare County tourism is much better than letting local leaders make local decisions.

I think that this is a great idea. I am for the kids going back in ealry August. I think that it will help the kids to take there exams before Christmas break. I mean a lot of the kids don't study during Christmas break, so when they get back they have forgotten some of what they have learned before the break.

Martin County schools are already starting back early. They went to Raleigh and got it approved last year.High schoolers start back on August 6 while elementary and primary goes back on August 25th. If you ask me I think it's sad that they can control when school can start back. And they wonder why the drop out rate is going up.DUH....
