Man Fires Gun Through Front Door After Warning Burglar

A homeowner fired his gun through his front door after hearing someone trying to break-in.

Beaufort police say it happened just before midnight at a home on Highway 101. Stephen Dudley, Jr. told officers after hearing that someone was trying to break in he got his gun. The homeowner says he fired after announcing that he would shoot if they did not stop.

Officers searched and found Adam Costa at a nearby convenience store on a bicycle. Police learned that the homeowner's truck had been broken into and a disposable camera was taken. A disposable camera was found when police arrested Costa.

A search of Costa's home netted police evidence from several other breaking and enterings. Costa was not injured and is being held on a $50,000 secured bond.

I agree whole heartedly with "Hold On Please", the loss of a young life would not have cured anything! Yes, what he did was WRONG and if put in the same position I'm afraid of how I might react, but not so sure I could live with myself knowing that I had killed someone that I was not 100% sure had the intent of harming me or my family. You have to stop a sec and think about his family, his upbringing, etc. Not defending him by any means! I do believe that he needs to pay for his crimes and hopefully after spending some time behind bars he will have the opportunity to reflect on his life and realize that everything that he does affects not only himself but also the ones that love him. I pray that when this boy is released he will have a whole new look on life and will turn his life around. Yes there is always hope for change and forgiveness! I pray for his family and Mr.Dudley and his family, they are the ones that are truly suffering at this time I am sure.

I think what everyone is missing is the fact he was not thinking. No matter if it was drugs or lack of regard for anyone but himself. The loss of a young life would of made this crime a million times worse on all involved. There is hope for everyone to change. Maybe, if we support organizations like Second Blessings prison outreach ministry fewer people will become repeat offenders.

TO: Well c-mon...I have been in this world for 26 years. If you think blacks do not play the race card then you are horribly mistaken, I see it all the time. I do stand up for blacks, but there comes a point where standing up does not do any good for that person, and to take it a notch further. We as a people need to stand up for each other black or white, parents take responsibility of your children and if the parents are not doing this then the community and church need to step it up. When I was younger ( in the same town where this same crime happened) anybody on their front porch would correct you when they seen you doing wrong. Case in point, instead of "defending them" we should "prevent them" by being proactive at the earlier stage. I say this for blacks and whites. We defend them when they are the victim. PLEASE, PLEASE, tell me how can we "defend" someone who has Robbed, Stole, or Killed someone??? .....Dont worry, I'll wait...

The homeowner needs a bigger gun, or if it was a shotgun, he should have been using 00 buck or slugs if he plans to shoot through his front door. If you're going to use deadly force to STOP an intruder, you need to be sure that the force you use will actually STOP him... PS, Mike is 100% correct. This was undeniably a "clean shoot", and the homeowner should be given a medal for defending his home, his life, and the lives of his family members against a lawless, sociopathic criminal. We need more people like this homeowner in Greenville. That would be MUCH more effective against the crime problem in Greenville than ANY amount of extra police on patrol...

Poor shot? No. He should not have shot without seeing the person. The shot could have gone into a home accross the street. Should the home breaker have been shot by the homeowner? Yes but only after he could verify his target.

Resa of Lewiston has obviously not taken the concealed carry class. I have TAUGHT the class. In NC deadly force is authorized to prevent gaining entry into your home if you have reason to believe they intend to do you harm. You do not have to know if they have a weapon. Only the THREAT is sufficient. If there is eveidence of attempted forcible entry, and you fear for your life or safety, you are within your rights to use deadly force. Once they are INSIDE you have an obligation to attempt to retreat, but are still within the law to use deadly force if you are threatened with a weapon. A weapon can be a screwdriver or hammer. It does not have to be a knife or gun. You only cannot shoot them in the back because going away they cannot pose a threat unless they are shooting at you over their shoulder. FYI!

If you feel black males are the culprit for committing the most crime than you have not live in this world long. First blacks don't play the race card. Most blacks are like you they don't defend their race. Most whites do defend theirs. When it come to jobs most whites might not agree with the another white person getting the job, but they don't try to stop it. Most blacks would keep another black from getting the job. So I applaud white people for standing up for their race. Wish blacks would do the same thing.
