Hundreds of people along the North Carolina coast are without power because of Hurricane Earl.
Progress Energy reported early Friday about 1,000 customers were without service in the company's service areas around New Bern, Morehead City, Jacksonville and Kinston.
Progress spokesman Jeff Brooks says the number of outages have stayed low because the strongest elements of the storm were staying off shore.
Kristie Aldridge with North Carolina Electric Cooperatives said crews would head out at daybreak to assess the damage.
