CARTERET COUNTY: State Of Emergency, Schools Closed, Shelters Open

Carteret County officials have issued a state of emergency.

They are calling for the "evacuation of the medically fragile population and low lying areas, manufactured and other fragile housing; particularly South River, North River and areas east of the North River Bridge. This includes all areas subject to sound side flooding."

Carteret County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Newport Middle School will open as a shelter at noon on Thursday. A special needs shelter will open at Leon Mann Senior Center at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Better to be prepared than sorry. If they had not done this they would have been beaten down with phone calls and people not knowing where to go other than their homes at the last minute. PLUS! They would have gotten a backlash of, "why weren't you prepared"! No, not too early.

To Mustainemad...the closings tomorrow will allow families that wish to leave to have their kids out of school without having an absence credited to them. I'm assuming school staffs will also be preparing the buildings and classrooms themselves.

You have got to be joking--closing schools??? Shelters already??? I'm never against prudent preparation, but this is ridiculous.
